What is a Visa?

A visa, also known as a travel permit or entry permit, is a government-issued certificate that allows foreigners to enter a country for a specific period of time.

What is a Visa Code?

A visa code refers to a unique numerical sequence that the immigration department is responsible for attaching to an individual’s passport. This code is assigned if the person meets the visa eligibility requirements.
The visa code is issued beforehand in the home country and then sent to the embassy of the respective country in the applicant’s home country. The embassy is responsible for reviewing the visa code and printing it on the passport. Having a visa code allows for a faster visa approval process.

What is the Korean Code Visa (Direct Visa) for study abroad in Korea?

What benefits does the Korean Code Visa offer?

Since its introduction, the Direct Visa (Code Visa) has attracted the attention of many foreign students studying in South Korea, including Vietnamese students. This new visa program offers many advantages for students. So, what are the benefits of the Korean Code Visa?

The code visa is prioritized for the fastest visa approval process.
It receives priority consideration in certain cases, such as when there is an overwhelming number of visa applications under regular procedures or when special circumstances arise as notified by the embassy.
Students with a code visa are not required to have an interview at the Korean Embassy in Vietnam.

How to apply for the Korean Code Visa?

To apply for a code visa, you need to obtain an invitation letter from the university. This is a crucial requirement and the most important reason for the embassy to grant a visa to students. The university plays a role in guaranteeing, requesting, and sponsoring students’ study in Korea. To have the university’s guarantee and sponsorship, students must submit their application to the university. The university will assess the qualifications and then issue the invitation letter.

Usually, this process requires a considerable amount of documentation to be submitted to the university. Once you have received the invitation letter, you can apply for a Korean Student Visa at the Korean Embassy in Vietnam. The waiting time is about one month if you submit the invitation letter to the embassy for visa processing.

Which universities can apply for the Code Visa?

According to the regulations of the Korean Immigration Service, only top 1% certified universities (direct visa universities) are eligible to apply for the Code Visa. This is a mandatory requirement. However, there are still universities that are granted the code even if they are not in the top 1%. Currently, Thanh Giang Co., Ltd. has partnerships with many top 1% universities and other universities that have been issued the code.

Note: It is currently very difficult for universities in the Seoul area to obtain the code due to high rates of student absconding. Therefore, if you want to ensure your safety, you should choose universities in other provinces or cities!

Documents needed to apply for the Code Visa

To apply for the Korean Code Visa, you need to prepare the following documents:

  • Colored passport
  • Certificate of high school grades/transcript (authenticated by the notary public and stamped with red ink)

Visa application procedure after receiving the code

After obtaining the Korean Code Visa, there is one more crucial step you need to take – a health examination. Students who have lung tuberculosis or other infectious diseases are not eligible to study in Korea.

Important note: Due to the current complex Covid situation, you will need to take a Covid test before submitting your documents to the Consulate / Embassy. (The Covid test certificate is valid for 48 hours from the test date).

After you have been examined at the designated hospitals appointed by the Consulate, you need to bring the completed code form to the Consulate and submit it. After submission, you will receive an appointment card. It usually takes 14 days to process your visa application.

Some important notes when applying for the Korean Code Visa for study in Korea

According to the regulations of the Korean Immigration Service, only top 1% universities (direct visa universities) are eligible to apply for the code visa for international students.

Even some top 1% universities may not be granted the code visa if there is a high number of students absconding. This is an indicator of the university’s lack of credibility and reputation, so be mindful of this issue when choosing a company to assist you with studying abroad in Korea.

Currently, it is very difficult for universities in Seoul to obtain the code visa due to the high rate of Vietnamese students absconding. You can consider reputable universities in other provinces and cities.
